The Lariosauro? Another sighting of the monster of Lake Como ", those that appear in newspapers, especially in summer when people are at sea, there is a shortage of news and publish even the buffalo?
No sir, this Lariosauro existed for real, though a little 'time ago, when there were no newspapers to speak of. Nor was
Lake Como, and indeed did not even exist in Italy and to go to the beach we should not even move, as a shallow tropical sea and scattered islands, similar to that of the Bahamas, where he was today found the Grigne. What? We have not noticed and we have missed an opportunity?
Well, no, we are actually talking about a lot 'of time ago, to be exact, over 230 million years. Elsewhere on the mainland were just ushering the first dinosaurs, whose oldest remains date back so far known, in fact, a couple of million years later.
In return, the tropical sea life that was rich and there were a lot of strange fish and their predators, including the lizard with fins which was given its name to Lariosaurus, ie "reptile found presso il Lario”, perché i suoi fossili vennero ritrovati in diversi esemplari, dal 1830 in poi, nel calcare bituminoso di Perledo e Varenna (il cosiddetto “marmo nero”).
Ma non vogliamo anticipare altro sulla serata con proiezioni in programma per venerdì 6 agosto, alle ore 21, organizzata dall’Associazione culturale “Scanagatta” di Varenna e dal Comune di Perledo presso la stazione ferroviaria di Varenna-Perledo (ingresso libero).
L’incontro sarà affidato a Giancarlo Colombo, che alcuni anni addietro, dopo lunghe ricerche, scrisse in proposito un libro divulgativo (fino ad allora, sul Lariosauro esistevano solo vecchi lavori scientifici destinati agli specialisti, di non facile lettura e pressoché introvabili). Il volume fu edito nel 2002 dall’Associazione “Scanagatta” e presentato a Varenna in occasione di una mostra che ebbe grande successo.
Nel frattempo, però, sono avvenute altre scoperte che costituiscono interessantissimi aggiornamenti dell’argomento, sul quale l’autore del libro e l’Associazione hanno curato due presentazioni in Power-Point, che saranno proiettate durante la serata.
Per concludere, se siete “laghee” metteteci un po’ di campanilismo, se siete turisti o forestieri metteteci un po’ di curiosità: venite a sentir chiacchierare della nostra gloria naturalistica, il Lariosauro, primo rettile fossile scoperto in Italia. We wait.
